Disclaimer: I am NOT affiliated with Starbucks in any way and was not sponsored to write this. I just like silly little beverages.
For such a big chain, you would think there would be more sugar free options at Starbucks. It’s really disappointing!
What Sugar Free Flavors Does Starbucks Have?
In comparison to other coffee branches, Starbucks is really lacking in the sugar free syrups.
The only sugar free syrups that Starbucks offers right now are sugar free Vanilla and sugar free Cinnamon Dolce.
Starbucks also offers sugar substitutes, which includes Splenda, Sweet N’ Low, or Stevia Blend from Whole Earth.
What Drinks Can Be Made Sugar Free at Starbucks?
Starbucks iced teas, brewed hot teas, brewed drip coffee, and espresso is sugar free.
Iced Black Tea
Teavana tea shaken with ice. This drink contains only three ingredients: tea, water and ice.
The iced black tea is one of my favorite sugar free options at Starbucks. I normally get a grande but in a venti cup with extra ice and no water.
Iced Green Tea
Starbucks green tea is a green tea blend with mint, lemongrass, and lemon verbena.
Like the iced black tea, the iced green tea also has only three ingredients: tea, water and ice.
Emperor’s Cloud And Mist Tea
The Emperor’s cloud and mist tea is a green tea with a slightly smoky aftertaste.
Personally, I actually like this tea more than the green tea!
Jade Citrus Mint Tea
The jade citrus mint tea is a green tea with notes of lemon verbena, lemongrass and spearmint.
If you love mint, this one is right up your alley.
Peach Tranquility Tea
This is another favorite of mine and a great option if you are looking for a caffeine-free tea.
The peach tranquility tea is an infusion of peach, pineapple, chamomile blossoms, lemon verbena and rose hips.
Iced Passion Tango Tea
The iced passion tango tea at Starbucks is a blend of hibiscus, lemongrass and apple.
To be honest, I’m not a big fan of this when it is unsweetened because it is a tad bit sour. But a lot of people seem to enjoy it!
Earl Grey Tea
Starbucks earl grey is one of my favorite teas because it has lavender and bergamot undertones, making it very warm and inviting.
Royal English Breakfast Tea
Royal English breakfast tea is one of my favorite beverages to start the morning!
I like adding a little bit of milk to this and requesting the vanilla sugar free syrup for a sweet treat.
Brewed Coffee/ Iced Coffee
Starbucks offers three types of coffee blends: Pike Place, Decaf Pike Place, and Blonde Roast.
If you get iced coffee, you’ll need to specify to your barista to omit the pumps of sugar.
Espresso/ Iced Espresso
Espresso is just a concentrated form of coffee so it will naturally be sugar free.
You can get espresso hot or iced.
Caffe Americano
A grande Starbucks Caffe Americano is three shots of espresso topped with water and a light layer of crema.
Cold Brew
The cold brew at Starbucks is slow steeped for 20 hours.
Nitro Cold Brew/ Nitro Cold Brew Can
According to their website, the Nitro cold brew is cold brew infused with nitrogen to create a more smooth texture.
I am not a coffee snob, so to be honest I can’t really taste a difference.
You can also get the nitro cold brew in cans that are sold in stores and on Amazon.
Sparkling Unsweetened Peach Nectarine Green Tea
Some Starbucks locations offer a Teavana Sparkling Unsweetened Peach Nectarine Green Tea.
These drinks can be found in the bottled refrigerated sections.
What Milk Should I Get With My Sugar Free Drink At Starbucks?
Starbucks offers a variety of milk including 2%, nonfat, whole, half and half, and heavy cream. Starbucks also offers oat, almond, soy and coconut milk.
All of the plant-based milk options will come with added sugar. Therefore, I suggest choosing a milk with a higher fat content, such as half and half.
If you do need a nondairy option, I would recommend the almond milk because it only has three grams of added sugar per cup.
Are The Frappuccinos Sugar Free?
No, the Frappuccino at Starbucks is not sugar free. The Frappuccino base is made of sugar and powdered xanthan gum that makes your Frappuccino smooth and keeps it from separating.
If you are looking for a beverage that has a Frappuccino consistency, you can request for your drink to be blended for a small upcharge.
Making Drinks “Skinny”
Most handcrafted espresso and Frappuccinos can be made “skinny” which means that the drink will be made with nonfat milk, no whipped cream, and a sugar free syrup if it is available.
Is The Lemonade Sugar Free?
No, the lemonade at Starbucks is not sugar free. It contains water, lemon juice, sugar, and lemon oil.
A grande lemonade at Starbucks has 27g of sugar.
Is The Matcha Sugar Free?
No, the matcha is not sugar free. In the United States, sugar is mixed into the powder. In other countries, the matcha does not have added sugar and liquid cane sugar is added to the drink itself.
Is The Chai At Starbucks Sugar Free?
Yes, the chai tea at Starbucks is sugar free.
However, the chai tea latte is not sugar free because it has pumps of chai syrup. So, if you are ordering a chai tea, you want to make sure you are getting the hot, brewed, chai tea.
Are The Refreshers Sugar Free?
No, the refreshers at Starbucks are not sugar free. They are made with a concentrate that is predominantly white grape juice.
How Do I Order Drinks With Less Sugar?
You can reduce the sugar level for any drink at Starbucks by customizing the syrups and toppings that go into the drink.
For example, if you want a grande reduced sugar pumpkin spice latte, you can ask for a pumpkin spiced latte with one pump of pumpkin sauce (instead of four), no pumpkin spice topping and no whipped cream.
One pump of pumpkin sauce is 8g of sugar, so by reducing the pumps from 4 to 1, you are significantly cutting the amount of sugar.
Are There Any Food Options For Diabetics At Starbucks?
The food options for diabetics are much more versatile than the drink options at Starbucks.
My go to choice is the egg bites, which come in three varieties: bacon and gruyere, kale and mushroom, and egg white and roasted red pepper.
Starbucks also offers a spinach, feta and egg white wrap, which has 34g of carbs and 20g of protein.
You can also get a bowl of oatmeal and omit the toppings that come with it. The total amount of carbs for the rolled and steel-cut oatmeal is 28g.
If you’re on the go, you can grab a protein box in the refrigerated section. The cheese and fruit protein box has 37g of carbs. The eggs and cheddar protein box has 40g of carbs. The pb&j protein box has 51g of protein.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed reading about the sugar free options at Starbucks.
Hopefully as the demand increases, Starbucks will expand on their sugar free options.
