Disclaimer: This post was NOT sponsored by Sonic. I am just a girl who likes fun drinks.
As some of you may already know, I am a HUGE fan of Sonic. Out of all the fast food chains that offer sugar free flavors, Sonic has to be pretty high up there for me! If you want a full breakdown of the sugar free options at Sonic, you can check out my post here!
I was browsing Pinterest when I came across a pin that showed a recipe for “Mermaid Water”. It utilized sugar free flavors so I figured I’d give it a try and OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS HEAVEN.
What Is Sonic Mermaid Water?
Mermaid water went viral in the summer of 2023 thanks to tiktok user Stephanie (@stephaniedreww).
Mermaid water is a water with sugar free raspberry, sugar free peach, strawberry puree, fresh lemon wedges and ice.
For clarification, mermaid water is NOT an official Sonic menu item. You can not go up to the counter and order a mermaid water. Instead, you will have to list out all the ingredients when ordering.
What Does Sonic Mermaid Water Taste Like?
Sonic Mermaid Water tastes like water that has been infused with fruit and not fruit syrup. It is incredibly refreshing with just the right amount of sweet from the strawberry and sryups. It also has just the right amount of tart from the citrus.
Sonic Mermaid Water Review
In my opinion, the mermaid water is in my top five favorite drinks I’ve tried from Sonic.
For both the price point and the flavor, this drink gets a 10/10 from me. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but you can also easily customize it to be sugar free if you are diabetic, following a Keto diet, or just looking to cut out sugar. It allows you to keep your silly little beverage without beating yourself up about it.
If you have never tried Sonic before, I would highly recommend starting out with this beverage. In terms of ease of ordering, it is very beginner friendly. Even if you aren’t tech savvy, I believe you won’t have issues ordering this beverage either at the drive through or on the app.
How Much Does Mermaid Water Cost At Sonic?
Costs will vary depending on your area but in my area in Texas the prices for Mermaid Water are as follows:
- Mini: $2.07
- Small: $2.17
- Medium: $2.27
- Large: $2.37
- Route 44: $2.67

How To Order Mermaid Water
Mermaid Water is not an official Sonic menu item so you can not order it right off the menu.
In my opinion, the easiest way to order your beverage is through the app. However, you can also order your drink at the window.
Here is a screenshot of what it should look like on the app:
Is Sonic Mermaid Water Sugar Free?
No, Sonic’s Mermaid Water is NOT sugar free. Even though there are sugar free syrups that are used, there is also strawberry fruit that contains sugar.
Even though the Mermaid Water is not sugar free, you can still make variations that are sugar free. Simply replace the strawberries with either a sugar free syrup or omit it all together.
How Much Sugar Is In Sonic Mermaid Water?
Here is the sugar content for each size of Mermaid Water:
- Whacky Pack: 6g
- Small: 6g

How Many Calories Is Sonic Mermaid Water?
The calories in the Mermaid Water will depend on the size you order. The app is a little tricky because they do not adjust the calories based on size.
I obtained calorie counts from Sonic’s nutrition & allergy brochure (found here). Calories are as follows:
- Whacky Pack: 25 calories
- Small: 25 calories
- Medium: 60 calories
- Large: 85 calories
- Route 44: 110 calories
Variations of Sonic Mermaid Water
The best part about Sonic is that there are so many ways you can mix and match their syrups to give you an endless amount of combinations. They really give you the ability to customize your drink to your exact liking.
Here are some ways you can personalize your beverage!
Lower Sugar Sonic Mermaid Water
If you’re looking to get a lower sugar version of the Mermaid Water, Sonic gives you the option to have “easy” strawberry fruit.
According to my local Sonic, “easy” would be half of what is normally put into your beverage.
For example, a route 44 mermaid water has four pumps of strawberry fruit. If you select “easy” strawberry puree, your drink would only contain two pumps of strawberry fruit.
Personally, I think the strawberries can be hard to suck through the straw, so I don’t mind an “easy” amount. However, it is up to your personal preference!
Other Sugar Free Flavors
I am a huge fan of all things mango so I also ordered this drink with sugar free mango instead of the raspberry and it tasted great! I call it the Sonic Tropical Mermaid Water!
Though I haven’t tried it with sugar free blackberry syrup, I do think a raspberry and blackberry combo sounds amazing too! Paired with the lemon, it may taste similar to a berry lemonade (one of my personal favorite drinks)!
Sparkling Mermaid Water
Although it isn’t offered on the app, the machines at Sonic do have a button for carbonated water. So, you could totally get this drink with bubbles! Yum!
Just be mindful that this may have an upcharge. I called my local Sonic and they said that when customers order soda water/seltzer, they ring it up as a Sprite.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed my article about Sonic Mermaid Water and give this yummy beverage a try the next time you’re there! I promise you won’t be disappointed!
