Disclaimer: I am NOT sponsored by Starbucks. I am just a girl who likes fun drinks. And to be honest I wouldn’t recommend any of these drinks because they taste like soap to me.
Starbucks has hopped onto the lavender train! Choo choo!
Starbucks recently rolled out a lineup of lavender drinks for their spring menu, which includes: Iced Lavender Oatmilk Matcha, Lavender Oatmilk Latte (hot and iced), Lavender Creme Frappuccino, Lavender Oatmilk Chill and Lavender Cream Cold Foam (link here).
Starbucks Lavender Powder Ingredients
The lavender used at Starbucks comes in a powdered form. According to their ingredient list, the lavender powder contains: sugar, salt, natural lavender flavor, color from fruit and vegetable juice concentrate (carrot and black current) and soybean oil.
How Much Sugar Is In The Lavender Powder At Starbucks?
One scoop of lavender powder from Starbucks is 4.33g of sugar.
I couldn’t find a nutrition facts label for this so I had to do some math.
A grande lavender oatmilk latte has 19g of sugar. A grande oatmilk latte without the lavender powder has 6g of sugar. Given that the only difference is the lavender powder, I subtracted and got 13g of sugar coming from the lavender powder. If there are three scoops in a grande, each scoop would come out to 4.33g of sugar.
How Many Carbs Are In The Lavender Powder At Starbucks?
Using the same method that I used to find the sugar in the lavender powder, you would just find the difference in carbs between the oatmilk latte (19g carbs) and the lavender oatmilk latte (36g carbs).
One scoop of lavender powder from Starbucks has 5.67g of carbs.
Does The Lavender Come Sugar Free At Starbucks?
No. Because the lavender powder contains sugar, you will not be able to make any of the lavender drinks at Starbucks sugar free.
That being said, I will break down each drink in this article and modify it so that you can have a lower sugar alternative!
Can I Have The Lavender Drinks From Starbucks If I Am Diabetic?
I am a big believer in finding balance, and I do not like telling my clients that they can’t have something.
However, when it comes to diabetes, you do need to be more mindful of what you’re putting into your body.
I’m not saying you can never have a fun coffee ever again, but you may want to pair it with a protein packed breakfast so that your sugars aren’t through the roof!
How Can I Reduce The Sugar In The Starbucks Lavender Drinks?
Let’s go through all of the drinks together to see how we can reduce the sugar in each one!
VERY QUICK NOTE: I called my local Starbucks, and they told me that their almond milk has less sugar than their oat milk (5g vs 7g per cup respectively).
BUT, I personally do not recommend switching out the oatmilk for almond milk. Oatmilk just has a level of creaminess that pairs better with lavender than almond milk.
Iced Lavender Oatmilk Matcha
Starbucks Iced Lavender Oatmilk Matcha is a matcha latte with lavender cream cold foam on top.
A grande iced lavender oatmilk matcha has 360 calories, 33g of sugar and 19g of fat. Because the matcha powder also has sugar in it, you’re looking at a double whammy of sugar from both the matcha powder and the lavender powder.
To reduce the sugar for this drink, I would recommend taking the matcha powder scoops from 3 to 2. I would also change the amount of lavender cream cold foam to “light”.
If my math is correct, this would bring your drink from 33g of sugar to about 23g of sugar.
Lavender Oatmilk Latte
The lavender oatmilk latte combines blonde espresso roast, lavender powder, and oatmilk. Both the iced lavender oatmilk latte and the hot lavender oatmilk latte contain two shots of espresso and three scoops of lavender powder.
The iced lavender oatmilk latte has 19g of sugar, and the hot lavender oatmilk latte has 20g of sugar. I am assuming the additional gram is from the milk foam at the top.
To reduce the amount of sugar in this drink, I would reduce the number of lavender powder scoops from 3 to 1. In the matcha drink, I find the lavender to be a more subtle flavor. But, in the oatmilk lattes, the lavender was pretty strong. I think you could get away with just one scoop of lavender powder and still enjoy it.
This alteration would bring your iced beverage from 19g of sugar to 10.34g of sugar, and the hot latte from 20g of sugar to 11.34g of sugar.
Lavender Creme Frappuccino
The lavender creme frappuccino blends lavender with vanilla syrup, milk and ice and is topped off with whipped cream. Probably the best tasting in the lineup, but the worst for you in terms of sugar.
A grande lavender creme frappuccino has 370 calories, 52g of sugar, and 16g of fat.
For a lower sugar option, I would change the amount of lavender powder from 3 scoops to 1 scoop. I would also reduce the amount of vanilla syrup pumps from 2 to 1, and remove the whipped cream. This would leave you with 36.34g of sugar.
If you wanted to reduce the sugar even further, you could change the milk from the standard whole milk to oat milk. Factoring the milk change and all of the previous modifications, that would bring your frappuccino down to 18.34g of sugar.
This customization is a little bit trickier than the others, mostly because it is really based on personal preference. For example, I would rather have the beverage be less sweet than to not have whipped cream.
Lavender Oatmilk Chill
The lavender oatmilk chill is a caffeine free drink that combines lavender powder, oatmilk, and dragonfruit inclusions.
A grande lavender oatmilk chill has 230 calories, 22g of sugar, and 8g of fat.
The dragonfruit inclusions really won’t add much to this beverage, so the main flavor is going to be lavender. And because it has neither coffee nor matcha, lavender is really the only flavor you’re going to get.
Thus, I would recommend reducing the number of lavender scoops, but only by one. So instead of three scoops, I would do two. This would bring your drink from 22g of sugar to 17.67g. It’s not much, but every little thing counts.
Lavender Cream Cold Foam
This one isn’t a drink but a topping. If you wanted to try the lavender but didn’t want to get any of the drinks mentioned above, you could always get the lavender cream cold foam on any other Starbucks beverage!
For example, I think the lavender cream cold foam would pair very nicely with a black cold brew or a black iced coffee!
Conclusion
While you can’t get a sugar free lavender beverage at Starbucks, there are ways you can customize your drink to fit your nutrition needs.
