I have been seeing dirty sodas all over the place! To be honest, I have been very hesitant to try it because it just didn’t seem like a drink that I would like.
But man, I was seriously wrong! I should have known that when it comes to silly little beverages, Sonic knows exactly what they’re doing.
What Is A Dirty Soda?
According to Wikipedia, a dirty soda is a soda “spiked” with cream and flavored syrups or fruit juices.
The concept of a dirty soda was first introduced in Utah but has since grown popular at drive throughs all over the United States.
What Does “Make It Dirty” Mean?
On the Sonic app, one of the options under flavor add-ins is to “make it dirty”. This means adding twisted lime syrup, sweet cream, and coconut syrup to your beverage.
Can I Get A Dirty Soda From Sonic Sugar Free?
No, you can not get a dirty soda from Sonic sugar free. This is because the sweet cream (AKA what makes the soda “dirty”) has sugar.
However, there are ways that you can modify your dirty soda so that there is less sugar. This includes swapping the soda for diet, reducing the amount of sweet cream, and changing to sugar free syrups or fresh fruit.
What Is The Sweet Cream At Sonic?
The sweet cream at Sonic is their liquid ice cream base that they also use for other menu items (such as blasts and shakes). In some locations, the ice cream base is mixed with filtered water.
Sweet cream is then portioned out using either a 1/2oz pump or one ounce ladle and the amount you get in your beverage will depend on the size of your beverage.
Does The Cream Curdle In A Dirty Soda?
To be honest, yes. The cream does tend to curdle in a dirty soda.
A dirty soda is honestly not the most aesthetically pleasing beverage to order. But you really don’t notice it because the cups at Sonic (at least in my area) are not transparent. So unless you’re opening it up at the top, I don’t see this being a large cause of concern.
What Does A Diet Dirty Soda From Sonic Taste Like?
The taste of your dirty soda will depend on the flavors that you get. But in general, a dirty soda tastes similar to a soda float with just a little bit more soda and a little less ice cream.
If you get lime and coconut added to your dirty soda, it tastes similar to a pina colada with soda.
How Much Sugar Is Sonic’s Sweet Cream?
The amount of sweet cream added to your drink will depend on the size of your drink. According to the Sonic Nutrition Allergen guide, sweet cream adds the following amount of grams of sugar:
- Wacky Pack!: 6g sugar
- Small: 6g sugar
- Medium: 11g sugar
- Large: 17g sugar
- Route 44: 23g sugar
Are Diet Dirty Sodas Keto Friendly?
I know that there is debate on whether or not diet sodas in general are keto friendly so I can completely understand the questioning here.
I think depending on how you order your dirty soda that it could be keto friendly. For example, a large dirty soda’s sweet cream add in will have 17g of carbs. But, you can ask for only one ladle or one pump of sweet cream, and that can lower it down to 6g of carbs.
Here are some of the best diet dirty soda orders from Sonic:
Diet Dr. Pepper Combinations
I live in Texas now and Dr. Pepper is SO BIG down here.
You could of course go with the classic: a diet Dr. Pepper with vanilla and sweet cream.
BUTTTT the best dirty Diet Dr. Pepper combo that I’ve tried has been a Diet Dr. Pepper with lime, coconut cream and sweet cream.
I try to lower the sugar just a little bit by replacing the twisted lime syrup for fresh lime. Personally, the only difference I notice is that it is less sweet. But the lime flavor is still very prominent!
Sprite Zero Combinations
People sleep on Sprite Zero but I think it is a perfect base for a dirty drink because it doesn’t taste like you’re adding things to a soda. It tastes more like one cohesive beverage, which I am all about!
The first drink I recommend is a take on the peaches and cream combo: Sprite Zero with sweet cream, vanilla and peach.
The second drink is a Sprite Zero with sweet cream, vanilla, and strawberries. This combo tastes like strawberry ice cream, which is one of my personal favorite flavors!
Coke Zero/ Diet Coke Combinations
I’ve tested these next flavor combinations with both Coke Zero and Diet Coke, so I feel comfortable grouping the two of them together into one category.
Even though I am not the biggest fan of cherry flavoring, it is undeniable that Coke and cherry go together like peanut butter and jelly.
So, the first drink I am recommending in this category is a Diet Coke/Coke Zero with sweet cream, vanilla and diet cherry. Basically, a cherry vanilla coke with sweet cream.
The next drink is a Diet Coke/Coke Zero with sweet cream and raspberry. Any time I see the drink machines where you can mix and match the flavors I always gravitate towards raspberry. So I knew this combo was going to be right up my alley!
Unsweet Tea Combinations
I know that this article is about diet dirty soda combinations at Sonic, but I liked this drink so much when I tried it that I thought it was worth a mention here as well.
You’re going to want to order an unsweet tea with peach and sweet cream. Very similar to the Sprite Zero order, just without the vanilla and bubbles. I found the vanilla to be a little bit too overpowering in the tea, but feel free to order it with your tea if you’d like!
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this article on diet dirty soda orders from Sonic and that you give one of these drink combos a try!
